Speaking during the event, Scom Southern Region chairperson Warmsman Jeremiah described the awards as a motivation to academic and spiritual excellence of Scom members.
“Every year, we award and reward Scom members to inspire them to nurture their academic and spiritual excellence which are key to their wellbeing. Our aim is to create a culture of hard work and excellence,” he said.

This year’s conference saw Scom awarding students who scored six to 11 points in the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations.

Jeremiah said Scom increased the scope of the awards from last year’s six to 17 points to six to 11 points this year to encourage students to work harder for next year’s awards.
According to Scom training secretary Umma Mgunda, the students were awarded for putting into practice what Scom has been teaching them.

One of the awardees, Laurent Kutengule from St Patrick’s Secondary School in Blantyre received K25 000 cash, two books and a certificate of excellence for scooping seven points.
He has since been selected to The Polytechnic, a constituent college of the University of Malawi, to study accounting.
Other outstanding students were Blessings Bande from Ndirande Hill, Ben Lombe from Chikwawa and Hassan Kamangila of Blantyre Secondary School.
